Our family recently watched the film Lincoln (2012) and it was obvious that Abraham Lincoln was on the side of freeing slaves in the US, and faced extreme opposition for doing so, and was even assassinated for it. Instead of celebrating his accomplishments and being grateful, many African American students in academia today are being taught that Lincoln is a "symbol of white supremacy" and are demanding that his statues be torn down. If enough students sign a petition at the University ofWisconsin-Madison, no matter how illogical, the pattern shows that the Lincoln statue there will likely come down.
It's difficult to fathom the level of
historical illiteracy and ethical illiteracy being taught in US
higher education today. The Lincoln film appeared mostly accurate,
except that the Lord's name was taken in vain about 13 times, even by
Lincoln, and this does not reflect the strong Christian values of
Lincoln shown in biographies and historical quotes, such as this
one:
"Sir, my concern is not whether
God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for
God is always right."
The film also explained how Lincoln
developed his sense of wisdom and logic in debating and arguing
against slavery. He was not a college graduate and only had about a year of formal schooling of any kind. But he studied Greek
logic intensely and used a principle of logic and mathematics by
Euclid to make a theistic and logical point:
Euclid's first common notion is this:
"Things which are equal to the same thing are equal to each
other." That's a rule of mathematical reasoning. It's true
because it works; has done and will always will do. In his book,
Euclid says this is "self-evident." You see, there it is,
even in that two-thousand year old book of mechanical law: it is a
self-evident truth of things which are equal to the same thing, are
equal to each other. We begin with equality. That's the origin, isn't
it? That balance-that's fairness, that's justice.
Lincoln argued that if we are all equal before God then we should also be equal under the law before each other. That was the essence of Lincoln's argument that helped end slavery in the US. Today, however, 'equal rights under the law' is not good enough for those trained in atheistic Marxism. They want 'reparations' for acts of previous generations. They want to rip off the old bandages of the settled matter on equal rights, that helped to end slavery and demand new rights.
A friend of mine asked me why I'm arguing against all the cultural Marxism that's on full display because it seems that people are already set in their own opinions. There are a couple of reasons. First, Marxism is based on false atheistic assumptions and this is why many 'social justice' precepts abd actions today are illogical. Once a person can see this, then it's not a long stretch towards understanding that the gospel is true, where ultimate healing, restitution, peace, and justice are found in God through Christ. Second, there's an important election coming up and if I can help just a few people to understand the extreme threat to our basic rights and freedoms the Democrat Party has become, it would be worth it.
If you don't believe in God and you think that it's irrational or incoherent to do so, consider that Richard Dawkins, the author of The God Delusion, to this day refuses to debate Christian scholar William Lane Craig in a live debate, and look into the illogical excuses that Dawkins uses for not debating him. This avoidance underscores why secular atheists are increasingly turning to destruction and not debate today as a means to 'burn down the system' because their basic ideologies are ultimately bankrupt.
I should emphasize that although Lincoln studied Greek principles of logic that he also gained a living and dynamic type of wisdom from reading scripture regularly:
"I am busily engaged in the study of the Bible. I believe it is God's word because it finds me where I am."
